TASKS
  1. Fill in the table by looking at the posters and trailers of 5 Action Adventure films that have different sub-genres. (Use films you have not previously used in other tasks.)

Answer the questions below in full sentences, using media terminology effectively (E.g. denotation, connotation, signify, diegetic sound)
and back up your point with evidence (PEEL).

  1. What similarities can you note between the sub genres? (at least 3)
They all have fantasy as their sub-genre.
  1. What differences can you note between the sub genres? (at least 3)
None.
  1. Although they have different sub-genres, do the plots contain any similarities? How do they follow the codes and conventions of an Action Adventure film?
They all have protagonists whom defeat the antagonists. In addition thay also battle in the city where the public is most vulnerable.
  1. Watch the trailers for each of your chosen films. How do you know that these sub genres are a part of Action Adventure films? Think about sound and the pace of the editing.
They all have special powers which they wouldn’t have in the real world. We the audience can hear the un-diegetic sounds when the protagonist is in danger. Furthermore, the trailer shows as the action and where it leads up to. This as an code and convention of an action/adventure movies because usually when a trailer is showed, they wouldn’t reveal what is going to happen, hence it makes us think what is going to happen next.

Action/Adventure Convention Analysis

Action/Adventure Convention Analysis
1.       The title of the film is Spiderman 3 and it was released on the 16th of April (Tokyo). The film was directed by Sam Raimi; Tobey Maguire   Kirsten Dunst  James Franco Thomas Haden Church Topher Grace Bryce Dallas Howard James Cromwell Rosemary Harris and J. K. Simmons  star in the movie.(reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man_3)
2.       The sub-genre of the film is romance; the relationship between Peter Parker and Mary Jane signifies this.
3.       The plot of the film is that Peter Parker has finally managed to piece together the once-broken parts of his life, maintaining a balance between his relationship with Mary-Jane and his responsibility as Spider-Man. But more challenges arise for our young hero. Peter's old friend Harry Obsourne has set out for revenge against Peter; taking up the mantle of his late father's persona as The New Goblin, and Peter must also capture Uncle Ben's real killer, Flint Marko, who has been transformed into his toughest foe yet, the Sandman. All hope seems lost when suddenly Peter's suit turns jet-black and greatly amplifies his powers. But it also begins to greatly amplify the much darker qualities of Peter's personality that he begins to lose himself to. Peter has to reach deep inside himself to free the compassionate hero he used to be if he is to ever conquer the darkness within and face not only his greatest enemies, but also...himself... (Reference: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0413300/plotsummary)
This is a conventional action/adventure plot because this film has protagonist and antagonist. In addition the hero was put in a situation where he had to save someone he cared about.
4.       The protagonist in this film is Peter Parker. He is a kind and generous person. He is a conventional hero because he saves people when they are in danger and defeats the antagonist every time.
5.       The antagonists of the film were Venom, Sandman, and Goblin Jr.  They were a conventional villain because the put the public in danger and were against the protagonist.
6.       No.
7.       The main signifiers used in the film to reveal it is an action/adventure to the audience are that there is a lot fighting. When the protagonists and antagonists were fighting in the city the public was always affected and the protagonist had to save the person ever time. When they fight the background setting was in an urban city with big buildings.
8.
9.       In the film, one of the action-sequences in the film was a long shot. This was used to show the stance of spider man and where he was.

10.   I think that it did break some of the conventions because a good person turns evil and becomes good, which happened to Harry. The photographer became Venom. These  in things have broken the conventions as this doesn’t usually occur in other movies. However, this had made the movie better as it makes the audience think what is going to happen and what the character would do.
